Documentary Family Sessions

capturing real life.

Documentary family photography sessions by Revel Photography is completely unposed and as authentic and natural as it gets. Imagine kids running around the house naked, playing in the sprinkler in the backyard, walking to the nearby ice cream shop, eating a messy lunch, impromptu hugs and kisses, having meltdowns, and just being their crazy and wild selves. During this session, we let your kids be kids and we capture what life is like for your family today. We freeze time so you and your family can look back in 20 or 30 years and remember not just what you looked like, but what it truly felt like to live a day in your lives.

As a Cambridge Documentary Family Photographer, I won’t ask you to clean your house or tell you what to wear. The idea is to just live, play, eat, nap, cuddle, swim, sing, dance and to just do you. I won’t direct any photos, I won’t get in your way, I won’t stress your kids out asking them to pose. I will observe and I will capture your beautiful and perfectly messy life.

Who is this type of session for?

Cambridge Documentary Family Photography sessions are best for families with toddlers and younger children who are active and busy and for parents that prefer to have their families documented as they authentically are. Families moving from one home to another might also want to consider a documentary shoot to remember their current home and how they lived in it.

How long is a documentary session?

Cambridge Documentary Family Photography sessions are generally longer than lifestyle or portrait sessions since the goal is to capture a glimpse into your life. The shortest session is 2 hours, the middle length is a half day session, and finally I offer a “day-in-the-life” session which covers is a full day from first thing in the morning until the kids have gone to sleep. I find the half day session is often the perfect amount of time, but full day sessions have risen in popularity in recent years as they provide a more full picture of your life today.

Where do these sessions take place?

Cambridge Documentary Family photography sessions generally take place at your home, in your backyard and in and around your neighbourhood. Since you’re just going to be living your life as you normally would, the photography would take place wherever you normally spend your days. Some families even choose to have a day trip or vacation documented!

A great option for a documentary session is your cottage! A day-in-the-life of summer at the cottage would be an incredible way to capture what life at the cottage looked and felt like. At this moment in time.
